Dahabiya
The more traditional, slow and potentially private way to sail the Nile.
The Greek historian Herodotus wrote that, “Egypt was the gift of the Nile”. Indeed, it was the annual overflowing of the Nile that granted Egypt her fertility and prosperity, and for millennia the river was considered the holy source of life itself. Indeed sailing the Nile has become a classic way to explore the country. Many chose to travel on a larger engined boat, but it is also well worth considering the traditional option of a Dahabiya, or houseboat.
These boats are sailboats, without engines, and make for a quieter and slower journey. In many cases it is possible to charter a Dahabiya privately, which is undoubtedly the ultimate way to travel, ideal for small groups, family bonding, and privately crafted itineraries.
As these boats are smaller than the Nile cruises, they can reach a wider range of places and offer additional experiences such as swimming in the river, impromptu picnics on the river bank, and meetings with local villagers.
